DESCRIPTION:“We’d love to share the good news with children and young people – but there aren’t any in my church” \nJust as Jesus’ ministry happened where people were\, we sometimes have to leave the comfort of our own environment to meet and reach people with whom we don’t normally have contact. \nFor children and young people\, that can often mean schools and colleges. In this session you will have the opportunity to hear from two youth and community work practitioners with experience of youth work in education settings: \nRuth Watson is a URC Minister. She currently exercises a Special Category Ministry MediaCityUK Church and Community Hub in Salford Quays.  This is a partnership between Oasis and the URC.  Her role is to build a church community in the Hub serving both the Academy and the local communities of Ordsall/Langworthy estates and MediaCity.  Ruth is involved with the Academy through chaplaincy and mentoring and occasional RE lessons; and with the community through PlaySpace; Talk English Café and sometimes with Youth Club and building up Holy Hub a Thursday evening Church Group. \nNigel Robertsis the Further Education Chaplaincy Ambassador in the West Midlands area as part of the work of the West Midlands Churches Further Education Council. Nigel has a wealth knowledge and experience in FE Chaplaincy and a passion to help church communities engage with and support those within the FE community in the West Midlands and beyond. In 2022 Nigel has launched FE Sunday – being held for the first time ever on Sunday 15 May 2022 – as an opportunity to pray for your local colleges and for the Further Education sector\, and to consider how your church could love and serve your local college. DESCRIPTION:Young people are the future of the Church (or are they already the Church?)\nNot disciples-in-training but disciples-in-waiting (or perhaps the other way around? I can never remember)! \nThere are a large number of cliches\, like the ones above\, about children and young people and the Church. Some we can read and they simply make us smirk or roll our eyes\, but others can ignite a more emotive response; a more passionate response. \nWe want to welcome children and young people into all aspects of the life and business and the Yorkshire Synod of the URC. Because we know that young people and children are the most dynamic\, richest and most beautiful part of the Church. \nWe are passionate. \nIf you are too\, join us on Saturday 19 March at Xscape Yorkshire\, Castleford (easily accessible by car and train). Lunch and refreshments are provided. DESCRIPTION:Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Online Training Session – Wednesday 10th November 7 – 8.30pm\nFollowing many requests that I have received\, I have arranged some training to be provided in relation to the (Disclosure and Barring Service) DBS. \nThis is completely separate to any training you may have attended provided by DDC (the company that oversees the checks on behalf of the URC). \nThis training session will be provided by Sue Davison who is the Regional Outreach Advisor for the Disclosure and Barring Service and nicely complements training that is being provided by myself in relation to safer recruitment\, contained within the Intermediate Safeguarding Training sessions.\nShe will discuss various points including – \n\nUnderstanding more clearly the role of DBS\nUnderstanding the benefits of DBS and our churches working together\nTo get a greater understanding of what ‘regulated activity’ means to our churches\nUnderstanding different types of harm\nTo have an understanding of how barring works in relation to DBS checks and the importance of our duty to refer these concerns\nHave a clear understanding of consequences of various actions whilst in the workplace\n\nThere will also be an opportunity to ask questions that you may have and I will also be in attendance to assist with any specific URC questions. \nTo reserve a place please contact Matt via email – matt.safeguarding@urcyorkshire.org.uk \nBest wishes \nMatt Knowles\, Safeguarding Adviser \n
