There was fun and laughter as Rev Alex Clare-Young was ordained at Christ Church Swanland on Saturday 13th July. The service, in which Alex was also inducted to ministry as Community Leader of Peter’s House, involved lego, music by the Script, and silly gifts including a fan to help Alex keep their cool and marbles, in case Alex loses any… Peter’s House is an intentional Christian Community that brings young people from around the world together to explore what it means to live a Christian life in churches and local communities today.
The service was conducted by Rev Kevin Watson, the Yorkshire Synod Moderator, and the congregation was drawn from a wide range of different churches. Representatives attended from the four URC churches in and around Hull that support the project, St Columba’s in York where Alex completed the final placement of their training, St Andrew’s in Scarborough where Alex’s partner serves as minister, Flowergate URC in Whitby where Alex is a member, St Peter’s URC/LEP in Manchester – Alex’s sending church, and representatives of the Iona Community of which Alex is a member.
Alex is also undertaking doctoral research into how transgender people, like Alex, can offer a message of transformation and reconciliation to the church.
