On Tuesday 31st October Brackenhall URC hosted a Halloween Good-news event from 5pm – 7.30pm when the church is usually open for its regular coffee drop in, Caffeinated Companions. Penny Weynburg tells more about the evening……
We welcomed in people who were out and about ‘trick or treating’ to come and have some fun and treats in the church. There were hot and cold drinks available so cold parents and children could warm up after walking from house to house and also homemade cakes in addition to the many sweets available.
There were a range of activities available, splat the rat and throwing balls into pumpkin buckets were both particularly popular.
We utilised the World Vision, Pumpkin Heroes resources to offer every child an activity sheet and sticker (along with a chocolate bar) when they left, and also the opportunity to make and/or eat marshmallow pumpkin treats.
Pumpkin style lanterns (made from glass jars painted orange at the previous Caffeinated Companions sessions) lead the way to the entrance and we decorated the church with pumpkins and apples (including some used for apple bobbing, an activity not compatible with face paint we found), as well as A3 posters with Light themed scripture verses shining out from the darkness.
The event was in association with Unite, Respect, Connect; with the support of 15th Cowcliffe Scout Group, & Moldgreen URC. All in all, it was a very successful evening bringing a total of 50 people into the church space.
