Megan Tillbrook, our Children and Young People Development Practitioner, tells of her recent visit to Zion URC, Cottingham to present 2 awards:

“At the end of October, I travelled to Zion URC in Cottingham excited to present 2 group award certificates as part of the Harvest Celebration. The Harvest Celebration was led by Katie Brooke, a life-long member of the church, current serving elder and captain of the Girls Brigade that meet at Zion. Katie ensured that there were opportunities for the girls to shine throughout the service, from leading prayers, readings, dramas and music.

The first award was presented to the 1st Cottingham Girls Brigade for their resilience and determination in rebuilding from scratch in recent years when numbers dropped to just 2! Katie tells an inspiring story about praying to God for a sign about whether the time had come to close the Girls’ Brigade unit, or whether there was still the need to meet young girls and local families and to share the Good News in this way. With each week that passed the group grew.

Katie commented, ‘The group takes an active role in church life; regularly attending parades and leading key services including the Easter services. These are well attended by local families and greatly appreciated. The occasions bring wonderful energy and new life into the church, with parents, siblings, and families joining together in celebration. 1st Cottingham Girls’ Brigade has faced its fair share of challenges but has come back stronger, more vibrant, and more committed than ever. Their dedication and enthusiasm truly deserve recognition receiving this certificate would be a fantastic way to celebrate all they’ve achieved!’

The second award was presented to the church family on behalf of the team that run the Toddler Group for the incredible amount of work it does and the positive impact that it has on the community. This year they have raised funds for Christian aid, Barnardo’s, Children in Need, and Comic Relief. One volunteer explained ‘The groups are always well attended and warmly supported by families within the village. I believe this group plays a vital role in the church’s outreach. Over the years, many children have attended and made wonderful memories that stay with them as they grow.’

It was wonderful to share in this special worship service and to celebrate all that the church family do to support, serve and care for families in Cottingham.”
