On Saturday 4th October, The Sheffield Partnership welcomed Revd Johnny O’Hanlon, at his Induction service at Central URC, Sheffield.
The church was packed with those from the Sheffield area, from Synod and from further afield for a great time of celebration.
Johnny shares some thoughts following his induction service, marking the beginning of a new chapter of ministry within the Yorkshire Synod:
“As this was my first induction, I have little to compare it with, but I can only assume that the warmth of the welcome and the generosity of the reception I received are characteristic of such occasions. Having said that, the afternoon of Saturday 4th of October certainly felt particularly special to me. It was such a joy to have family and friends present and online, together with members of the various congregations in Sheffield. Their kindness and encouragement made the day both memorable and deeply meaningful. I felt surrounded by genuine care and support, and I look forward to developing strong, healthy, and trusting relationships with those I will serve and minister alongside in the months and years ahead.
I was unsure what Rev Dr Simon Cross might say in his charge to me and to the congregations, but his words proved both humbling and deeply affirming. They offered a timely reminder of the sacred trust and shared calling that ministry represents. Hearing such generous affirmations felt, in the best possible sense, a little like attending one’s own funeral, all the kind things people might say, but with the rare opportunity to hear them in person!
As Rachel and I begin to settle into life in Sheffield and become more familiar with the ways and workings of the Yorkshire Synod, we do so with a sense of excitement and anticipation. This new chapter offers an opportunity to listen attentively for God’s guidance, to grow in faith and understanding, and to help nurture communities where all may flourish in love, grace, and service.”
The Yorkshire Synod extends a very warm welcome to Revd Johnny O’Hanlon and Rachel, and we wish them every blessing as they begin this new season of ministry among us.
