On Saturday 29th March a small group of young people from across the synod gathered to talk together about issues of faith, justice and inclusion. The day started with fun and games and then into the first session discussions. We were reminded of the rebellious nature of the United Reformed Church and challenged the group to consider what a rebellious church would look like today. The group shared those who inspired them in their own lives and why.
It was a welcoming and safe space where each young person was able to share a part of their story with the group, whether that be about their local church, their family and friends or their school and college life.
Kacie Hodgson, current URC Youth Assembly Moderator Elect talked to the young people about how important their voices are and shared some examples of how their ideas could be shared locally, in synod and through Youth Assembly.
We spent a significant amount of time identifying the issues that the group felt were important in society, and considering the ways that churches could be a positive influence. Accessibility, inclusion and representation was important to the group, especially around LQBTQIA+ and disability. The group also spent time talking about how important youth work is both inside and outside of the church – and the benefits of being brave enough to meet young people ‘where they are at.’
Then came the fun part – we had a pottery lesson! We all had the opportunity to find our inner artist and decorate a ceramic tile. Also, we were guided very quickly (but gently) through how to mold clay on a pottery wheel. It was all very messy but great fun and a new experience for everyone.
Tony Harris, the Children, Youth and Family Enabler for the NOW Mission & Care Group reflected on his experience, ‘this was my first Yorkshire Synod Youth Forum gathering, and I can honestly say I hope it isn’t my last. The overriding theme for the day was justice, and some very important issues were discussed. One of these was the importance of reaching the next generation with the message of Jesus and the importance of the Gospels. What a wonderful time with some very passionate and gifted young people. I’d recommend this to any of the teens in our churches to attend, it may just be what they need.’
Then all back to the Heckmondwike URC for lunch, more games and prayer together. The young people decided that they wanted to keep this conversation going and agreed to meet online on Wednesday 7th May at 7.30pm.
